Fellowship

Fellowship program

From 2001 - 2004

The Medialink fellowship program funded and arranged in-country residencies for mid-career Australian and Asian media professionals.

The aim of the fellowship program was to offer opportunity and encouragement for Australian media personnel to work in Asia, and similarly for Asian media to be exposed to Australian politics and culture as well as media technology and procedures.

Medialink arranged attachments and partial funding for Australian/Asian working media to spend 3 to 12 months working in a news organisation in Asia/Australia so that they are more aware of some of the many aspects of their host country's political, economic, social, cultural and religious features. Exchangees return with more highly developed professional and personal skills in addition to more knowledge of Australia/Asia.

The fellowship program was open to:

  • all categories of news media, including newspapers, magazines, radio, television and on-line news;
  • all categories of media personnel, including editors, producers, script writers, photographers, artists, camera crews, advertising personnel and technicians as well as reporters.

Fellowship recipients worked for their host news organisation (not their home paper/broadcaster), and where possible lived with a host family or colleague/s (not in a hotel).

Medialink arranged attachments for fellowship recipients in the country of their choice. Recipients could stipulate a specific news organisation they wanted to work for, or could make their own arrangements.

Other media programs allow for Asian media to visit Australia for conferences, familiarisation tours, work experience, etc. Medialink complemented and expanded such programs by providing for a longer-term work experience where media personnel could then return to their same employer with job guarantee.

The program is currently under review. More information will be posted as soon as possible.
