1.4 billion people live on less than $1.25 per day, according to the World Bank. In our Asian region, World Bank estimates over 200 million people in East Asia, over 600 million in South Asia are living on less than $1.25 a day.

In the face of this global reality, we are in Australia – a country in the top 15 economies, among the top 20 in living standards and only the 50th or so largest country in terms of population.

Join Peter Singer in a discussion about why we give, or don’t give, and what we should do about it to save lives and eradicate world poverty.

Peter Singer is an internationally renowned philosopher and author on ethics. He has been Ira. W. DeCamp Professor of Bioethics in the University Center for Human Values at Princeston University since 1999. Also since 2005 he has combined this with an appointment as Laureate Professor at The University of Melbourne. Peter Singer is an alum of The University of Melbourne and the University of Oxford.

This event is co-organised by Readings Books, Music and Film and Asialink at The University of Melbourne.
