The opportunities for Australia to engage in the dynamic performing arts in Asia are boundless. But are we missing out and at what cost? 

 

The Hon Kevin Rudd, Member for Griffith will launch Alison Carroll and Carrillo Gantner’s petition for greater investment in our performing Arts engagement - Finding a Place on the Asian Stage. 


Jason Yeap AM, NGV Foundation Board member will discuss visual arts and Asia. Mr Rudd and Mr Yeap will join the authors in a discussion of the way forward for Australia's performing and visual arts engagement with the region.


The Many Moons Choir will also perform a range of traditional Mandarin Chinese and English songs on the evening.


Copies of Finding a Place on the Asian Stage will be available for purchase, and Alison and Carrillo will be signing copies of the book.


The authors:


Alison Carroll

Alison Carroll AM was founding director of Asialink Arts 1991–2010. She has initiated residency programs for Australian artists in Asia, managed countless exhibitions and events in Asian countries and negotiated performing  arts and dance exchange programs with Japan and Indonesia.
Carrillo Gantner AO Carrillo Gantner AO has had a long involvement in the arts and began his career as an actor. He was a founding director of the Playbox (now Malthouse) Theatre Company, executive director from 1976–84 and artistic director 1988–93. From 1985–7 he was counsellor (cultural) at the Australian Embassy in Beijing.

Carrillo was chair of the Performing Arts Board and a member of the Australia Council 1990–3. He has been a member of Australia-China Council, a governor of the Federation for Asian Cultural Promotion. He was chair of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival for six years and chair of the Victorian Arts Centre Trust. Carrillo is also the founding chairman of Asialink. He is currently president of the Melbourne Festival and chair of the Sidney Myer Fund.
