Description

The first Sydney dinner of the 2009 Asialink Leaders Program will focus on Japan.  This event will delve into key parts of Japanese history in order to understand contemporary political and economic issues facing Japan.   

Speakers:

Mr. Jason Hayes is a Partner and Japan leader at PricewaterhouseCoopers.  Jason has a deep understanding of Japan based on his 3-year assignment in Tokyo, Japan.  He has considerable knowledge & experience servicing Japanese multi-national organisations.

Jason specialises in providing assurance and advisory services to companies primarily in the technology sector. Clients include subsidiaries of listed foreign multinational companies (including SEC Registrants) and private companies in the technology sector. He also has extensive experience covering initial public offerings and due diligence (buy-side & sell-side) and investigations both in Australia, Japan and the U.K.  Jason will chair the evening.

Dr. Lionel Babicz is a lecturer at the University of Sydney, and holds a PhD from the Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales, Paris.  Lionel Babicz teaches and carries out research in modern Japanese history, particularly the history of Japanese-Korean relations and the intellectual history of the Meiji period (1868-1912).

He was a lecturer at the Department of East Asian Studies of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and a researcher at the Maison Franco-Japonaise in Tokyo. He is also associate researcher at the Japan Research Center of L’École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris.

Dr. Malcolm Cook is Program Director, East Asia at the Lowy Institute for International Policy.  He completed a PhD in International Relations from the Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies at the Australian National University. Malcolm also holds a Masters degree in International Relations from the International University of Japan and an honours degree from McGill University in Canada, his country of birth.

Before moving to Australia in 2000, Malcolm lived and worked in the Philippines, South Korea and Japan and spent much time in Singapore and Malaysia. Before joining the Institute in November 2003, Malcolm ran his own consulting practice on East Asian political and economic policy reform and risk analysis.

Malcolm’s research interests include: Political economy of North East and South East Asia; East Asian regionalism; and the impact of party and electoral systems on policy reform efforts.
