Balancing Act: Taiwan
An Asialink public forum

Thursday, April 28, 2005

Taiwan is in the midst of fundamental social and political change that is redefining its relationship with mainland China and the world. Understanding the new Taiwan is crucial for managing cross-strait tensions and avoiding the policy decisions nobody wants to make.

Recent events have reminded us that the Taiwan Strait is still one of the world's hot spots. A war between China and Taiwan would pose major problems for the regional and global economy and present Washington, Tokyo and Canberra, with a series of vexing choices that would shape their relations with the region for decades to come.

Asialink hosts three leading Australian experts in a public discussion of Taiwan's Cross-Strait challenge:

  • Dr Malcolm Cook, Program Director (Asia & the Pacific) at the Lowy Institute of International Policy and co-author of the newly-released Lowy Institute report on Taiwan
  • Dr Paul Monk, Principal of Austhink, and a former senior intelligence analyst whose work at the Defence Intelligence Organisation concentrated on China, Taiwan, the Koreas and Japan
  • Professor Bruce Jacobs, Professor of Asian Languages and Studies at Monash University, a specialist in Chinese and Taiwan politics and society, and a current Professor of History at Nanjing University, China

When: Thursday 28 April 2005
Time: 6.30pm - 8pm
Where: Basement Theatre, Sidney Myer Asia Centre, The University of Melbourne (corner of Swanston Street and Monash Road)
