Sun Rising: Japan in Melbourne
Wednesday, 21 July 2005
The new and edgy arts of the street in Japan - anime, manga, robot-culture, fashion - are eagerly studied, enjoyed and frequently copied around the world. What makes Japan this new centre of cool? What has been the impact on Australia's youth culture?
Join Asialink for this first all-day forum on contemporary Japanese culture to be held in Melbourne.
Lead speakers:
- Ms Akiko Miki, Chief Curator of the major contemporary museum in Paris, the Palais de Tokyo, will speak about issues surrounding visual culture in Japan today.
- Mr Tadashi Uchino, one of the leading commentators on Japanese performance culture, coming from Tokyo.
Panel discussions will include Japanese Vision (the visual arts culture of Japan), Japanese Action (the performative culture of Japan) and Japanese Words (the literary culture of Japan). Organised by Asialink, it is a major contribution to understanding one of the most important and creative cultures in the world today.
The forum is free and open to the public
