China's foreign policy and diplomacy with Professor Qin Yaqing

Tuesday, 6 July 2006

Once again Asialink secured one of the region's leading political commentators for an exclusive free public lecture. Professor Qin Yaqing, Executive Vice President, China Foreign Affairs University and respected commentator on China's foreign policy and national identity, spoke at Asialink early in July to a large audience.

Professor Qin emphasied that China does not have the standing to lead the regional process and that her focus is internal, providing for the well being of its own population. Professor Qin suggested that constructive dialogue based on trust for all East Asia nations would lead to a "bright future".

In replying to a question on the recent North Korea missile launch, Professor Qin acknowledged that perhaps China may the largest role to play among the six nations in mediating with North Korea.

Professor Qin has published many books and articles, including Twenty Years' Crisis (forthcoming), Perception and Misperception in International Politics (2003), and Contemporary China and Its Foreign Policy (2003). He was on the resource team for the UN High Panel for Challenges, Threats, and Changes (2003) and worked as Special Assistant to the Chinese Eminent Person, China-ASEAN Eminent Persons Group (2005)
