China's Rise and the ANZUS Treaty

China's Rise and the ANZUS Treaty

Thursday, 06 April 2006

In an Asialink Policy Lecture, Professor Ross Terrill from Harvard University's Centre for East Asian Research spoke on China's rise in the Region. China's rise is generally welcomed as it brings cultural enrichment and a market for Australian products. Professor Terrill also made the point that a united and strong China is more desirable for Australia, the US and others in the region than the historical alternative of a fragmented China. However against that, an authoritarian China with territorial claims would be detrimental in the Region and it is in that light that Australia's continuing involvement in the ANZUS Treaty and countervailing power would be most effective.
