Dr Krishnaswamy Kasturirangan, Director, National Institute of Advance Studies in Bangalore spoke recently at Asialink about the history and current practice of India's space programme. He presented a fascinating account of India's 'space enterprise' from its first rocket mission in 1963 to the space programme's current mission of satisfying national development needs.
Dr Kasturirangan described India's INSAT (India National Satellite System) program and how it assists the nation's telecommunication, TV, radio, meteorology and disaster warning capabilities. As a developing nation India's space programme focuses on useful applications in the areas of agriculture, water and environmental management.
Dr Kasturirangan is highly decorated with a number of Indian and international awards. He is the first Asian to be awarded the prestigious Brock Medal in 2004 and received France's highest decoration The Legion of Honour in 2002.
