Taiwan Straits: New Developments, New Approach?

Monday, 22 May 2006

At Asialink in May a panel of experts made up of Professor Bruce Jacobs of Monash, Professor Stuart Harris of ANU and Dr. Malcolm Cook of The Lowy Institute examined the developments and possible approaches by the three major players: Taiwan, China and the US on the tensions in the Taiwan Straits.
Professor Bruce Jacobs argued that new thinking must apply to Taiwan-China relations and that there should be increasing global recognition of Taiwan's self identification. Professor Stuart Harris examined the China position and put forward the view that Taiwan's own politics may determine how this relationship may progress into the future. In reviewing the regional architecture, Dr, Malcolm Cook put forward Japan's position in the region as well as the perception that a peaceful rise of China would only be beneficial to the region.
