2006 saw the return of the inspired lecture series on Islam
Islam's development within Australia continues to evolve and, as a response, these lectures, collectively titled the Soul of Islam, have attempted to discuss Islam in personal, national and regional contexts.
Significant and learned members of the local Islamic community presented seven Soul of Islam lectures this year. The speakers brought to the lectures personal perspectives that were supported by substantial research and investigation.
Most notably, Waleed Aly evoked the wonderful parade of nationalities he witnessed when he went on the Hajj earlier this year. Similarly Rachel Woodlock explored Muslim feminism in Australia's modern context, recounting her 'mosque audit' that assessed Melbourne's mosques accommodation of the needs of female worshippers.
Suparto, in lecture number three, looked at Indonesia's pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) and gave a detailed analysis of the daily lives of their young scholars, and Saara Sabbagh spoke about motherhood with the Islamic context.
These well-attended lectures are part of Asialink's popular free public lecture programme and are run in conjunction with the Asia Education Foundation and the Islamic Council of Victoria. It is anticipated the Soul of Islam series will continue in 2007.
