The Sun Rises - Briefing on Japan by HE Mr. Murray McLean OAM, Ambassador to Japan

In a frank and informed speech His Excellency Mr Murray McLean addressed a capacity lunchtime crowd at Asialink in the Sidney Myer Asia Centre.

Mr McLean spoke on the importance of Japan to Australia in terms of trade as well as the many cultural exchanges which have taken place. Mr. McLean updated the audience on the progress of the feasibility study on the bilateral FTA between Australia and Japan. He spoke frankly about the rise of China in regional dynamics and the continuing importance of Japan in this architecture.

Mr McLean formally took up his appointment as Australian Ambassador to Japan on 10 December 2004. In his distinguished career, Mr. McLean had been High Commissioner to Singapore as well as Consul-General in Shanghai. His experience, particularly on Asian issues, include studying mandarin at the University of Hong Kong.
