Why:

  • not to lose knowledge: 'extinction prevention'
  • for use in future
  • to make regional connections
  • part of discourse

What:

  • awareness of different types of discourse in different cultures including issues of 'traditional' and 'contemporary'
  • awareness of internal/external knowledge
  • awareness of different foci and impetus for archives
  • complex relationship of 'active' artist and 'passive' archivist
  • difference of transmission of knowledge by experience compared with documentation
  • complexity of 'tradition' - it is alive when alive and changing
  • very few publications on Asian culture in Australian public collections

By and for whom:

  • awareness of internal/external knowledge
  • identify the audience: youth obviously important

How:

  • issues of funding and time, including funds for artists' own archives
  • use of web
  • issues of collection, storage and distribution
