Australian artist in resident Guy Benfield, at Changdong Art Studio in KoreaAustralian artist in residence at Changdong Art Studio in Korea, Guy Benfield participated in a project organised as part of the Korea International Art Fair (KIAF). Guy created an installation and performance work which was very well-received by the Korean audience. Guy has also completed his residency and returned to New York where he is currently based. His performance at KIAF will inform the creation of new video works that will be exhibited at the National Museum of Contemporary Art in November 2011.

Korean artist in residence Yongseok OhKorean artist in residence Yongseok Oh’s video works has been shown on the big screens at Federation Square, Melbourne. Media coverage: Korean Today newspaper article, English translation, 22 September 2011 | Radio Interview: SBS Melbourne Korean Language Program, 18 September 2011. Yongseok has now completed his three-month residency at Artspace, Sydney and returned to Korea. Yongseok’s video works have been included in an exhibition of Korean art at the Gold Coast City Gallery that opened on 4 November 2011.

Taiwanese artist in residence Lichun Tseng's Open Studio at PICATaiwanese artist in residence Lichun Tseng, is nearing the end of a three-month residency based at Artsource, Fremantle and PICA Perth, and held an open studio in early October 2011. Her exhibition titled 'Beyond the Beyond' engages the senses by asking visitors to walk on dried grass-tree leaves, smell the melting resin and weave their way through hand-felted suspended works. Since starting her residency in Perth, Lichun has become increasingly interested in remote areas of WA and native Australian flora and fauna. She hopes to return some day and undertake a residency in rural Australia.

Ella Barclay, artist in residency at Treasure Hill Artist Village, Taipei Ella Barclay exhibited a new multi-channel video installation titled Maelstrom Studies during her residency at Treasure Hill Artist Village, Taipei. The series continued her ongoing exploration of the restless, disordered or tumultuous mental states we often experience when drifting online but incorporates the theme of a Maelstrom, whirlpool or storm. “I realised it was no longer okay to float along the surface, wallowing to a self-sung serenade of whimsically half-lit ideas. I had to go down into the depths, into the eye of the vortex” (Ella Barclay, Taipei, June 2011). Since returning from her residency Ella has been short-listed for the Helen Lempriere Travelling Arts Scholarship 2011.

Sarah Goffman, artist in residency at Tokyo Wonder Site
Sarah Goffman spent 3 months at Tokyo Wonder Site collecting waste and converting it into art objects. Her activities involved transforming detritus into aesthetic arrangements, and producing a series of new works based on traditional maki-e techniques that culminated in a tea ceremony with tea master Izumi Murata. She participated in 3 open studio events and worked with various artists and theater groups including the Yakokan Theater Group in Aomori, Mika Kurosawa’s dance troupe in Tokyo and Kiguchi Theater Group. Sarah stayed on in Japan after her residency for a project at Bank Art in Yokohama where she utilized works during her residency and collaborated with Japanese dancer Lina Ritchie.
