View Masters - Remix
4-18 February 2007, Osaka

Organisational partners:
West Space, Melbourne
Arts Aporia, Osaka

Artists: Nathan Gray, Dylan Martorell, Geoff Robinson
Curator: Jane Hindson; exhibition manager: Simon Maidment

View Masters - Remix Exhibition is an exhibition of hybrid work presented at Hamadera Koen Gallery, Osaka, Japan, during February 2007. Melbourne based Artist Run Initiative, West Space, have teamed up with Osaka Arts Aporia under the direction of Kojima Takashi to generate a new opportunity for cultural exchange. Three Australian artists, Nathan Gray, Dylan Martorell and Geoff Robinson, alongside curator Jane Hindson, travelled to Osaka to work with artists involved in the View Masters project, including Haco, Toshiya Tsunoda, and Yuko/Mariko among others. The artists undertook training workshops to study the View Masters philosophy and techniques before creating new audio-visual installations in Hamadera Koen Railway Station Gallery. Using sound and visual materials sourced from the tram and train networks that run through Osaka, the artists' work also reflects upon the transport networks in their home city of Melbourne.

The project looks to expand the existing View Masters annual program initiated between Haco and Osaka Arts Aporia - by lending a cultural exchange element between the sister cities of Melbourne and Osaka. Asking participants and audiences to literally view how we look at sound, all artists have examined how everyday sounds define our scope of reference, delineate our space and create patterns of movement. The displacement of the Australian artists and their involvement in workshops run by Japanese colleagues has hence resulted in a unique exhibition, accompanying performances and publication.
