Major General Craig Orme
Head of People Capability, ADF

- It is important to understand that Western democratic nations have militaries that are apolitical and subordinate to government.
- There is a geographic dislocation between the defence force and the people it serves. Defence personnel are concentrated at great distances from the major centres of population. The bulk of the ADF is deployed in the North, North East and West of the nation while the major population centres of Australia are in the south-eastern seaboard.
- The Australian Defence Force is meeting its challenge to recruit young Australians with imaginative marketing and communication strategies. Recruiting high quality people will be important given the wide demand for quality workers across the broader labour market and the anticipated requirements of the defence plans (contained in the White Paper).
