  • Every challenge – climate change, terrorism, GFC, disaster relief and other, requires groups of states working together, which is why we are multilateralists.
  • We appreciate much of the existing regional architecture, including ASEAN-led institutions, but think that new architecture may be necessary in the future. The proposal for an Asia-Pacific community has led to a productive discussion and we recognize that the development of improved regional architecture may have to be a long term endeavour.
  • The government is heavily committed to the development of the G20, which is effective in representing the global economy.  It’s in Australia’s interest that the G20 remain the key institution when dealing with global economic crisis and concerns.   • As we continue to enhance our engagement with the Asian region, we are recognizing and appreciating the role of the Republic of Korea, not just as an economic partner, but also in a range of strategic dialogues.
  • One way in which the India relationship is being enhanced is through becoming a dialogue partner with SAARC – an arrangement that commenced last year.
