Dr Kate Armstrong
GP/CMO
Peter Gill Medical Centre
Kate and her husband David are co-founders of CLAN, a charitable organization that focuses on improving health outcomes for children living with CAH (Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia). In Australia, children with CAH enjoy access to appropriate treatment (tablets taken three times a day), and as a result their quality of life is excellent. Unfortunately in countries where the medication is neither registered nor affordably available, children suffer or die, and their families frequently spiral into poverty as they struggle to provide the care their children need.
Through collaboration with pharmaceutical companies, the Royal Children’s Hospital International (RCHI – the philanthropic arm of RCH, Melbourne), and the efforts of countless health-care professionals and CAH Support Groups both in Australia and overseas, CLAN is currently helping over 500 children in Vietnam, the Philippines and more recently Indonesia to enjoy better lives. As doctors overseas hear about the progress for CAH patients in neighbouring countries, requests to CLAN for assistance continue to increase.
Kate graduated from Newcastle University, and currently works as a General Practitioner (GP) in Sydney. Post-graduate courses in Child Health and Public Health have facilitated her work with CLAN to date, but she is very hopeful that the Asialink programme will help CLAN’s work in the future to be as effective and efficient as possible.
