Peter Kerr is Commissioning Editor at The Sydney Morning Herald where he manages the paper's senior writers and helps develop major news stories, features, series and investigations. He was previously Foreign Editor, driving the Herald's coverage of overseas events including the September 11 terrorist attacks, Afghanistan invasion, Iraq war and the 2004 tsunami. He has been a reporter and sub-editor for Australian Associated Press in Canberra, Sydney and London, worked on a range of newspapers and magazines, been a political reporter in Sydney and Canberra, and worked for a former Federal Labor minister in his electorate and in parliament. He has an honours degree in English literature and history from the University of Newcastle and has studied Indonesian language and culture in Sydney and Central Java. His special interest is Indonesia, where he travels whenever he can and in 2001 spent several months working on The Jakarta Post on an Asialink-sponsored placement.
