My name is Kirsty Thompson and I am an occupational therapist, researcher and educator interested in community practice and community development. I am employed at the University of Sydney where I am engaged in teaching as well as project development and project management in research and fieldwork education. In addition, I am the process of submitting my doctoral thesis examining the cultural practice of family service provision in community settings.
I have been fortunate to work with families and service providers in urban and rural community settings in both Australia and India. I began as a “grass-roots” worker in the disability field. I have since relished the opportunity to become involved in the education of therapists and other community health and rehabilitation workers here and overseas. I also pursue similar interests in family well-being, community services and disability through involvement in various research initiatives, presentations and publications.
These experiences have allowed me to work closely with a number of Government and Non-government organisations at policy, management and grass roots levels. I have come to relish the questions, ideas perspectives and practicalities inherent in these collaborations with groups outside of my traditional sphere.
With the completion of my graduate studies, I am looking forward to getting more strongly involved in community development issues and having more time to enjoy outdoor life again! I am looking forward to the challenges and ideas represented in the diverse AANLP 2002 program and group.
