Yu-Lan studied Asian Studies at the Australian National University, majoring in Korean language and linguistics and spending one year as an exchange student at Korea University. She was involved in a number of campus activities including Golden Key and the ANU Korean Society, of which she was president and a founding member.
In 1997-1998 Yu-Lan studied in Seoul as a Korea Foundation Language Fellow, then worked at the Graduate School of International Studies, Korea University. During this time Korea was deeply affected by the Asian economic crisis and Yu-Lan was able to gather a great deal of material for her Honours thesis, which examined Korean media portrayal of non-Koreans in times of perceived national crisis.
Yu-Lan is currently living in the ACT and is a research officer for the Group of Eight (Go8), a coalition of Australia's leading research-intensive universities.
