Project: Indigenous women in natural resource management.
In collaboration with FAO, and local Cambodian government officials in Cambodia and the Rural Women’s Opportunity Forum in the Murray Valley, this project will develop and commence implementation of a strategy that will explore the most productive ways for the two groups to support each other.
Workshops will be held in both regions to elicit culturally appropriate strategies for both groups. A timetable for collaboration will be established.

Project: Harnessing Chinese-Australian Business Innovation.
This project will conduct a survey of Chinese-Australian business innovators to better understand their business practice, achievements, networks and barriers to innovation.
The results of the survey will be presented in a paper to DIIRD and the Innovation Board. A seminar and media launch will disseminate the results of the survey

Project: Australia / China Film Industry Relations: A Co-Production feasibility study and strategy.
This project will undertake a feasibility study, incorporating a risk assessment analysis to identify the potential of a co-production treaty between Australia and China.
If feasible, a framework will be developed to outline a recommended way forward for future co-productions and the signing of an MOU in this field between China and Australia

Project: Breaking the Cultural Barrier: Bringing cross-cultural issues to legal professionals.
The project will provide materials and training for people working in the Victorian legal profession on cross-cultural issues relevant to people from Asian backgrounds and Indigenous Australians.
Two hour seminars will be offered to:

Project: Review of Microfinance Projects in Indonesia.
More than 27% of Indonesia’s population of 213.6 million live below the national poverty line and more than 55% live on less than US$2 a day.
Microfinance – the provision of very small loans (microcredit) to very poor families (particularly in rural areas) – is a development tool which has great potential to improve living standards. This project will audit and evaluate current micro-finance projects in Indonesia under the following headings:
- Providers
- Donors
- Size of outreach
- Interest rates
- Affordability
- Rural and urban projects
- Training component is
- Savings enhancement
- Insurance
- Leadership available to this sector

Project: Victorian International Development Assistance Partnership (VIEDAP).
Australian Volunteers International (AVI) is eager to respond to constant requests by overseas partner organizations for technical assistance in the areas of education and training.
The Victorian Department of Education and Training (DE&T) aims to increase professional development opportunities for teachers and education professionals, in particular in the Asia region.
To this end, this project will develop and implement a strategy to jointly offer a specific professional development programs for teachers and education professionals from Victoria to work in Indonesia and potentially in Cambodia

Project: Building Local Government Capacity Drawing on Regional Experience.
This project will identify in the first instance two local government areas in Australia and Indonesia respectively with a common environmental issue and who are willing to engage in an information exchange program.
A needs analysis and resource audit will be undertaken in both places to an appropriate mechanism/s to more accurately identify appropriate ways in which the exchange can be facilitated.
Recommendations for ways forward will be identified.

Project: Australia-Asia business links: The next generation.
This project is in two stages:
- Stage One will research current individuals and organizations working with new technologies (eg IT, biotech, design, media) within the Asian-Australian context, with a particular focus on Chinese-Australians
- Stage two will develop and implement a strategy to promote and integrate these people more closely into the work of Asialink, MIALS and the University of Melbourne through its public and leadership programs, eg as speakers, participants and eventually as committee and board members

Project: Doing Business in East Timor.
This project will involve researching the relationship between the East Timorese Constitution, international covenants, UN regulations, Indonesian law, and customary international law, as well as pending bills. The research will inform an accessible document providing advice on the tips and pitfalls of doing business in East Timor within the current and future legal contexts.
The document will used as a marketing tool demonstrating expertise in doing business in East Timor.

Project: Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Australia.
This project will develop a strategy for an online “gateway” to Australian entrepreneurship and innovation with a focus on cross-cultural issues.
The strategy will reflect shared partner objectives and addresses issues such as resource distribution and licensing.
It will explore ways of producing a youthful cross media(radio/television/online) resource for prospective regional students of entrepreneurship and innovation, whilst engaging the wider business, learning and youth communities of China, South Korea and India.
The resource will feature case studies that inspire, are entertaining and at the same time provide substantive educational content .
Partnerships will be formed with key university, government and corporate organizations to develop the content and outcomes of the project.

Project: Understanding the needs of Muslim students on campus.
Muslim students in particular often are unaware of services and facilities available to them. This is particularly important as they are often reluctant to make use of other facilities and are alienated from the larger student body.
In consultation with relevant University bodies, this project will undertake an audit of existing facilities and services for Muslim students at the University. On the basis of this research, it will produce a comprehensive document detailing facilities, services and support available for international students, particularly those required by Muslim students at The University of Melbourne.
The project will also make recommendations to the University as to how these offerings can be improved in the future.

Project: Dairy Heifers and Bull Beef in China.
This project has been selected for funding by the Australia China Agricultural Cooperation Agreement. The project builds on existing relationships with key agricultural figures in both China and Australia.
The project will consult with relevant government and commercial stakeholders in China, Australia and more broadly and undertake field research into the key components affecting the development of the Chinese beef industry.
The second stage of the project will seek to collaborate with China on creating strategies for enhancing the level of dairy heifer export to China as well as implementing a commercial bull beef industry in China.
The third stage of the project will be to use the knowledge gained to expand the scope of the relationship to assist in the development of other relevant areas of the Chinese agricultural sector.

Project: Reducing student exploitation.
A trend has been identified that students, primarily from China are being exploited shortly after taking up their positions at Tertiary Institutes in Victoria.
Exploitation comes in the form of demands for protection payments, unrepayable loans, or direct demands for money. These demands come from either fellow students or ex students that have overstayed their visa.
This project will work to address the issue through a Vicpol initiated campaign
The campaign will include an information package delivered to students as part of their induction campaign and a series of seminars/ workshops for educators, students and their families to help address the issue, explaining reporting procedures etc.

Project: Towards an understanding of the web of relationships involved in human rights in South East Asia.
There is a need to collate, research and assess information from a variety of sources on human rights in South East Asia.
Focusing on Indonesia in the first instance, this project will audit current literature and interrelationships involving human rights from an Australian as well as an Indonesian perspective. The audit will form the basis of a resource that the target audience can draw upon and use to work more effectively in South East Asia.
