Lucinda Hartley: a global response to rural-urban migration

Lucinda Hartley is director of Melbourne-based [co]Design studio (Community Oriented Design), who are now working with an Indian-based design team on a four hectare site in Bangalore. The site is combating the negative effects of rural-urban migration and aims to provide educational opportunities for local children.

‘[This migration] is being fueled by the global economy, so they want a global response,’ she says.

Having already worked collaboratively on projects in Vietnam and Cambodia, Hartley is keenly aware of the need to recognise cultural differences when in Asia.

‘The more you work cross-culturally the more you realize that there is no right, there is no wrong, but there are differences,’ she says.

‘But it’s not a point of opposition, it’s a point to begin to understand.’
