Rod Eddington on Australia-Japan third country trading opportunities
Sir Rod Eddington has urged Australia to explore third-country opportunities as a way of leveraging its close trading relationship with Japan.
‘We need to recognise the work of Japanese companies outside of Japan and in the rest of Asia’, he said.
Eddington highlighted that Australia’s trading relationship with Japan has been built on the export of resources and agriculture, and the import of high quality precision-manufactured goods.
As both economies are now increasingly services dominant, Eddington sees great opportunity for more comprehensive linkages.
‘Unless we’re careful, we may see ourselves behaving like an old married couple: we’re entirely familiar with one another’s strengths …and weaknesses. And we forget that we need to invest in the relationship into the future’, he said.
